What Are Blood Clotting Disorders?

Blood Clotting Disorders Disease

Blood clotting disorders occur when your blood is unable to form clots, leading to uncontrolled bleeding. These conditions are caused when your blood is lacking the substances, called platelets and clotting factors, that cause blood to clot, or when the platelets and clotting factors are not working correctly. If you are experiencing mysterious, uncontrollable bleeding, then it is probably beneficial to learn more about the different types of blood clotting disorders.

Most Common Blood Clotting Disorder

Von Willebrand disease, or VWD, is the most common blood clotting disorder. It affects up to 1 percent of the United States population. It is caused when the blood is missing Von Willebrand factor, a protein that assists in the clotting process, or when the existing Von Willebrand factor is defective.

People with VWD experience frequent nosebleeds, easy bruising and excessive bleeding after routine procedures, like dental work. Women with this condition may experience heavier-than-usual menstrual bleeding and hemorrhage after childbirth.

Hemophilia is a genetic disorder that is caused when a parent is a carrier of a specific gene mutation that causes missing or defective factor VIII, a clotting protein. While females can be hemophilia carriers, the disease most commonly manifests in males because it is carried on the X chromosome. A woman with the gene mutation likely also has a healthy X chromosome, which means she will not be affected with the hemophilia symptoms.

The most common type of this disease, hemophilia A, affects approximately 1 in every 5,000 live births in the United States. There are three levels of severity, ranging from mild, in which bleeding lasts longer after injury, to severe, in which spontaneous internal bleeding occurs. Hemophilia B has similar symptoms but is caused by missing or defective factor IX. There is a range of other, rarer factor disorders that affect only about 200,000 Americans combined.

If you or a family member is experiencing unexplained bleeding, frequent bruising or other symptoms consistent with blood clotting disorders, it is critical to get the condition checked out sooner than later. Consult our qualified medical professionals at vein center Miami
