There are a number of reasons why veins can appear on your legs during pregnancy. First, your body decreases the speed at which blood returns from your legs to your pelvis, which increases the pressure on the veins. We inject prescription sodium chloride into the veins and the solution affects the vein’s lining, which causes it to stick together and seal completely. Don’t worry, your blood is redirected and the closed veins are removed by the body and replaced by healthy tissue.
Foam Sclerotherapy
For those larger veins that need to be treated with something stronger, foam sclerotherapy is a viable treatment. It uses the same sodium chloride solution but it’s then rapidly mixed with air that causes it to turn into foam, which can then better coat larger veins. The end effect of the vein closing up and then being removed by the body is the same as the visual sclerotherapy discussed above.
Ultrasound-Guided Sclerotherapy
If you have bothersome veins that can’t be easily seen under your skin, we can use ultrasound guided sclerotherapy to target the veins and safely remove them from your body.
Endovenous Laser Ablation
Technology is always evolving and treatments that use lasers have now become the norm for certain procedures that in the part needed surgery. For veins that are large or too deep, we can now use a laser to gently heat and seal veins in less than 30 minutes.
