What is Endovenous Laser Ablation?

Endovenous laser ablation is a treatment for varicose veins. It is a procedure that uses laser heat to cauterize the affected vein, causing it to close. The blood naturally passes through healthy veins, and the varicose vein is gradually absorbed by the body and disappears. Endovenous laser ablation is mainly used for larger varicose veins in the legs. First, our specialist inserts a thin laser fiber into the vein. This only involves a tiny incision that requires no stitching. Once the laser fiber is in place, laser energy causes the vein to heat, which ultimately makes it seal shut.

Endovenous Laser Ablation is Non-Invasive

The treatment is non-invasive and has a much shorter recovery time than ligation and stripping. These are surgical procedures that require general anesthesia because the vein is physically pulled out of your leg.

After your varicose veins have been treated with endovenous laser ablation, you will be able to walk immediately and return to work or other normal daily activities. You may be asked to wear compression stockings for a week or two, and our specialist will check the vein after about a week to make sure it is closed. The treatment may take up to 30 minutes per leg.

Several Treatments for Varicose Veins

There are several treatments for varicose veins, and one treatment may not be the best for everyone. When you have a consultation with our specialist, you can learn about your options. Varicose veins do not always show under the skin. You may have symptoms without the unsightly bulging and twisted veins. If you have any of the following symptoms, you may want to consider treatment:

• Dark purple or blue veins just below the surface of the skin
• A heavy feeling in the legs with occasional aching
• The pain is worse after sitting or standing for long periods
Muscle cramping, a burning sensation, and swelling in the lower legs
• Itching in the area of the purple veins
• Small sores or ulcers that appear on the surface of the skin in the area of an affected vein or near the ankle
• Discoloration of the skin
