How Do I Know if I Have Vein Disease?

Vein Disease – CVI

chronic venous insufficiency

A vein disease affects the veins in legs and is common in many men and women by the age of 50. When there is an issue in superficial veins, the deep veins carry the excess blood, but the superficial veins may become varicose.

This means the blood that does not get pushed to the heart pools in the vein, causing it to expand and become swollen and poke through the skin. When this happens, it is called chronic venous insufficiency (CVI).

Symptoms of CVI

If you have any of the symptoms of CVI, it may be important to have a consultation with our board-certified doctor at Fox Vein & Laser Experts. The main symptoms of CVI are swollen ankles, a heavy feeling in the legs, restless legs, aching and a tight feeling in the calves. These symptoms may become worse when you are walking and shortly after you stop walking. In serious cases, ulcers may form on the lower parts of the leg.

The main cause is high blood pressure in the legs over a long period of time. This may damage the valves, so they do not properly push the blood. In some cases, people may have a genetic disposition to have CVI. Other more serious causes are phlebitis and deep vein thrombosis.

Deep vein thrombosis is caused by a blood clot in the deep leg vein. It may be very serious because the clot can move and end up in the lungs.

During a consultation at one of our two locations in Hollywood and Pembroke Pines, our doctor will ask questions about your past medical history and general health. You can mention the symptoms you have that made you think you may need treatment for vein disease.

The doctor may conduct a physical exam and measure your blood pressure in your legs. If you have apparent varicose veins, the doctor will examine them. There are several tests that are used to determine if CVI is present.

Safe and Effective Treatments for CVI

Chronic Venous Insufficiency

There are several safe and effective treatments for CVI. If your case is mild, compression stockings may be all you need. There are also non-surgical treatments that may take less than an hour and can be completed in our office.

Sclerotherapy is a treatment in which our Aventura vein doctor injects a solution into the affected vein that makes it gradually shrivel. The excess blood is carried by the deep veins. This treatment can certainly make your legs look smooth again.
