Is Microneedling Safe
We all want beautiful skin, right? Of course. While there are a multitude of skincare products and facial treatments that can help perfect the skin, sometimes it’s worth it to go the extra mile and dig deeper into the dermis. Microneedling does just that.
What is Microneedling?
But wait, what is microneedling? It is a cosmetic skincare treatment that involves making micro injuries to the skin using a device with tiny sterilized needles. As the body works naturally to heal from these tiny wounds, it produces more collagen and elastin, which attributes to that youthful glow that both men and women love to see. Collagen and elastic can also help improve a lot of different skin issues, such as fine lines, wrinkles, stretch marks, scarring, acne/acne scars, hyperpigmentation, loose or sagging skin, sun damage, and it even helps with hair loss.
Since microneedling essentially is the act of damaging the skin on purpose, you might be wondering is microneedling safe? Just as with any cosmetic or aesthetic treatment, there are both risks and rewards.
While there is no downtime needed after treatments, keep in mind that pores are open during the first 48 hours as the skin begins the healing process. If you have had the treatment done to your face or neck, makeup is discouraged for at least 24-48 hours, and if you have had treatments done to the body, it’s important to make sure to keep these areas clean and hydrated at all times.
There is very low risk for infection, especially if you are healthy, keep your skin clean, and the equipment used during your treatment is kept clean, but it is something to be wary about since microneedling creates little holes in the surface of the skin where germs could potentially enter. During that initial part of the healing process, it’s recommended to steer clear of any irritating soaps or products, and places where a lot of bacteria or germs could be hiding, such as swimming pools, the ocean, lake, etc.
Post Treatment Symptoms after Microneedling
Post-treatment, you may experience side effects such as bruising, redness, tightness, itching, peeling, and sometimes bleeding — although this is rare. This is all part of the healing process and will dissipate on their own in either as little as a few days, or it can take 2-3 weeks depending on how deep the needles pierce into the dermis.
The risk for scarring and/or allergic reactions to the post-treatment serum or cream is also a possibility, but we don’t see this happen too often. Our aesthetician will always perform a consult first to ensure you are a good candidate for the treatment. If you have very thin or sensitive skin, or have skin conditions such as rosacea or keloids, microneedling might not be a good option for you.
There are devices on the market for microneedling at home, however for the safest, most sanitary and effective results, this treatment is best performed by a licensed and experienced aesthetician in a professional environment where the needles can be properly sterilized.
Contact Us at Fox Vein & Laser Experts
At Fox Vein & Laser Experts, we use best-in-class microneedling technology VirtueRF. This is microneedling with radiofrequency, and it can be used on the face, neck, hands, and body. Treatments are quick, taking only about 10 to 30 minutes, depending on the area being worked on. Patients can apply a numbing cream to the area about 30 minutes prior to the session. Following the treatment, a serum will be applied to help calm the skin and kickstart the healing process.
With the New DeepRF and ExactRF handpieces, we are able to target specific areas even more than ever before with more power. The DeepRF is used for the body, specifically to address loose, sagging skin and/or stretch marks. It can also be used on the neck or jawline. The ExactRF is even more targeted, for use around the eyes to address crow’s feet and under eye bags. For optimal results, we recommend a series of 3 sessions.
