What Causes Spider and Varicose Veins?

Varicose and spider veins appear because of structural abnormalities in blood vessels. Your veins carry blood back to your heart. They have valves that only work one way to push the blood along the vein.

When these valves become weak, they don’t work, and the blood starts to pool in the vein, causing varicose veins. They usually develop on the legs. Spider veins are seen on the legs and face. They appear as red or purple veins that are twisted.

It is more common to see varicose and spider veins in women than men. Statistics show that approximately 30 – 60 percent of adults have varicose or spider veins. There are several causes for varicose and spider veins. The most common cause is heredity. If your mother or father has varicose veins, there is a good chance you will too.

Other causes may include:

• A job that requires hours of standing such as a hair stylist, nurse, teacher or factory worker
• Hormonal changes during puberty, pregnancy and menopause
• Obesity
• Birth control pills
• Increased pressure in the abdomen such as constipation, tumors and wearing girdles

You may be developing varicose or spider veins and not realize it yet. Some of the symptoms that indicate they are developing can include swelling, throbbing and aching in the legs, a burning sensation, itching, tingling, heaviness or cramping.

Our specialist will examine the affected area and determine if varicose veins are developing, or treat them if they can already be seen. An exam includes a visual inspection of the area. We will also look for skin redness or other discoloration, swelling and skin ulcers.

Most varicose and spider veins may not require treatment, but some may develop complications and should be treated as soon as possible. They can also be treated for cosmetic reasons, because they are unsightly, especially for young people who enjoy the beach and other summer activities.

There are some things you can do at home to relieve the symptoms. Support stocking or compression stockings will improve your circulation. Regular exercise can also relieve the symptoms of spider and varicose veins. Whenever possible, it is recommended to elevate your legs while sitting or sleeping. This also improves circulation.

If you would like to get rid of them for good, we have several treatments. After the required number of treatments, the affected vein will gradually fade away, and the blood will flow through other veins that are deeper in your leg.

During a consultation, you can learn about the seriousness of your problem and the various treatments available. These treatments are proven safe and effective, so there is no reason to live with unsightly varicose or spider veins.
